Kurzdefinition/Historisches Wörterbuch der Biologie: "Eine Art ist eine Menge von Organismen, die sich in einer oder mehreren Hinsichten ähneln oder die eine kohäsive Einheit bilden. Die Zusammenfassung kann darauf beruhen, dass die Organismen sich in ihrer Gestalt und ihrem Verhalten ähneln ('Morphospezies'), dass sie bei sexueller Fortpflanzung und im ausgewachsenen, gesunden Zustand und bei unterschiedlichem Geschlecht paarweise miteinander fruchtbare Nachkommen zeugen können ('Syngamospezies'), dass sie aufgrund ihres Ursprungs in einem nur ihnen gemeinsamen Vorfahrenorganismus einen (minimalen) Ausschnitt des Stammbaums der Organismen bilden ('Kladospezies') oder dass sie sich in ihren ökologischen Ansprüchen und Rollen ähneln ('Ökospezies')."1) Siehe auch: Georg Toepfer, Artikel "Species" auf BioConcepts.
